FITNESS | My First Week of P90X

I really never thought I'd be writing these words. If you would have asked me a few months ago (or even a few weeks ago really) what the three LEAST likely blog post titles I could ever write would be, I'd have said:

And yet, here we are. And I did just type that title. And I am about to talk to you about how I just finished my first week of the original P90X and how I actually kind of liked it and how I'm excited to see where this program takes me in my fitness journey. WHO AM I RIGHT NOW?!

If you follow me on social media, you know that a few weeks ago I decided to give P90X a try. I had been doing Piyo for about a month on our road trip and when we got back I was feeling like a new challenge. You might be wondering how I, the person who has said over and over that I don't like workouts longer than 30 minutes, came to this decision. To be honest, I don't really know. Maybe it was a moment of weakness? In my first week of P90X I definitely has a few moments where I though, "Why did I decide to do this again?!" But overall I feel empowered. And a little bit excited. Here's why...

Years ago, pre-baby times, I tried P90X. Just 2 of the workouts... the cardio one and the yoga one. And I couldn't make it even halfway through either. I fully gave up on it and wrote it off as a workout for legitimately crazy people. And I've never tried it again since then. In fact, when Beachbody asked me to be in the corporate test group for Tony Horton's newest program: 22 Minute Hard Corps, I was super skeptical because my only experience with Tony was those 2 workouts I failed miserably on.

For the first week of P90X I just dabbled. I tried random workouts from the program and still mixed some Piyo in. I was SHOCKED that I could finish the long workouts without feeling like death. Don't get me wrong, they are super challenging! And I wake up sore the next day for sure! But even the fact that I can get through them is truly a testament to how effective the short workout programs I've been doing from Beachbody are! When I tried P90X years ago I was running and going to the gym and still couldn't get through it. Now I'm doing simple half hour workouts from home and I am able to slay my P90X workouts. What a difference!

Hopped up on American Ninja Warrior inspiration stories and the confidence I was feeling from being able to get through the P90X workouts, I decided to officially commit to it. Mostly because I want to prove to myself that I can do it. Yeah I've got fitness goals, I want to be in the best shape of my life this year, and I feel like to do that I need to up the ante, but I really just wanted to see if I could. Do you ever feel that way? I want to see if I can push myself while also managing the symptoms of my Hashimotos disease. I know it will be tricky, but I'm tired of feeling limited and held back by it and I want to prove that I am stronger than my circumstances!!!

For years and years I've told myself that I'm just not cut out to be an athlete. That I'm not genetically blessed to have a fit body (or a body that responds quickly to exercise at all). That I'm not strong enough to do workouts like P90X. That I'm just not the type of person who likes working out hard. That I'm never going to be someone who has a body they are proud of and I should just accept that. And I just came to this point where I thought to myself, "ENOUGH!" So here we are! Still with me?

First week down! My before photo and 1 week progress photo are at the top of this post! I didn't take my weight at the start but I do have photos and measurements so I'm excited to see how this program brings new results! I've gotten a few questions on social media that I wanted to answer for anyone following along...

PROGRAM: I decided to follow the "Lean" calendar. P90X has a few different calendar options: Classic, Doubles, and Lean and after reading up on each I decided I wanted to try Lean.

ACCESS: I do have a hard copy of P90X on DVD but a few of you on Snapchat noticed that I've been streaming it every day from Beachbody On Demand. (You're all so perceptive!) P90X is one of the included programs On Demand so anyone who has Beachbody On Demand can access it. You can get a free 30 day trial here if you want! (After that it's just $2.99 a week which is amazing!)

NUTRITION: Even though P90X comes with a nutrition guide, I love the Potion control container plan from Beachbody that goes with 21 Day Fix and 22 Minute Hard Corps so I'm sticking with a tweaked version of that. Basically, I'm experimenting and seeing what works best for my body. My daily meals go something like this: protein and veggie for breakfast, fruit, carb, seeds/nuts, veggie and protein for lunch, protein and veggie and fat for dinner. (It falls into category 2 on the Portion Fix for anyone wondering what calorie bracket I am working in. I should be in calorie bracket 1 but I've found that when I do high intensity workouts I need the extra carb and protein serving each day or my body holds onto weight and won't let it go.) It's been a week and I feel pretty good with that breakdown but I'm paying attention to my body and I might tweak it as I go if I need to. I'm also drinking vegan chocolate Shakeology every single day. And I'm using some of the Beachbody Performance Line. If you're interested in trying any of these things just shoot me an email and I'll help you find the best deal!

I'm going to try to do weekly updates! We'll be traveling a bit in the middle of this but I'm going to do my best to make it through. I also am planning on doing a Hashimotos update soon so if you're interested in that make sure to stick around. PERSONAL | To the Father That Couldn't Not Be

We didn't really know how long it would last.
We just knew that we wanted to be together.
We knew we wanted to dance.
We knew we wanted to explore.
We wanted to be seeing new things.
We knew we couldn't not be.

We didn't really know that we wanted to get married.
We just knew that we wanted to never be apart.
We knew we wanted to be united.
We knew we wanted to share a future.
We knew we wanted to be a family.
We knew we couldn't not be.

We didn't really know how different our life would be after a child.
We just knew that a baby boy was on the way.
We'd knew we'd be busy.
We'd knew we'd be exhausted.
We'd knew we'd be challenged.
We knew we couldn't not be.

But he didn't really know what an amazing father he was going to turn out to be.
He just knew that things would never be the same.
I knew that he'd find his groove.
I knew that he'd be adored.
I knew that he was going to be great.
I knew he couldn't not be.

Happy Father's Day to the man who gave me the best gift of my life! Happy Father's Day Nate!

PERSONAL | We Saw Rock City and Lookout Mountain

I'm not sure there's much as iconic in the south as those little red birdfeeders that read "SEE ROCK CITY". And I had no idea what to expect of Rock City. I did very little research. None in fact. Such little research, actually, that we arrived at Rock City 5 minutes before their closing time. Luckily, they don't kick you out at closing. In fact, you can stay in as long as you want as long as you go in before closing time! This worked out incredibly for us because we basically had the entire grounds to ourself which made for some pretty epic photos and explorations!

Rock City is made up of these incredible sprawling gardens carved into the side of a mountain with caves, caverns, cliffs, and bridges culminating with a view of 7 states. Next to that is a giant waterfall and stomach turning cliff called Lover's Leap! It's all magical themed with little gnomes and nursery rhyme inspired vignettes hidden throughout. If you're going with kids, I highly suggest going at the end of the day. I've heard that during peak times you can barely move around which would take all the fun out of exploring the hidden gems this place has!

FITNESS | Why I Chose Piyo (A Tale of Travel and Hashimotos)

workouts to do when traveling

So a few weeks ago on Instagram I let the cat out of the bag that I was committing to Piyo as my next workout program. It's been a little over two weeks of it and I'm still super happy with my decision. As part of the official 22 Minute Hard Corps Corporate Test Group I had been 150% committed to Hard Corps for the last 4 months and I knew that I needed to pick a program to jump into because if I didn't I'd get lazy and I didn't want to lose my progress. I knew I needed a change of pace after all that intensity! I had quite a few people ask me about it so I thought I'd write out a post and share about why I chose Piyo as my follow up program to Hard Corps!

I lost over 20 inches and about 8 pounds with 22 Minute Hard Corps. (See my 22MHC results here!) And I gained tons of strength! I loved my results and how I felt about finishing it! I've never felt more proud of finishing a program and more confident in how much I'd grown stronger! But I do have a goal to lose more pounds and that wasn't happening a ton with Hard Corps. Now let me make it really clear... lots of people lost lots of pounds with it. But I am a unique case because I have an auto-immune disorder called Hashimotos and it makes it really difficult for me to lose weight. One of the big factors to consider about Hashimotos is that it's linked to your stress levels. And 22 Minute Hard Corps is a really intense and challenging program (read: more stress on my body than I was used to). While I was getting crazy stronger, feeling amazing about myself, and losing inches, I also started to notice some of my Hashimotos symptoms creeping back in. I believe it was due to me incorporating more foods back into my diet that I am sensitive to (dang it!) and also due to the high intensity of the workouts.

So... I decided to go back to Piyo to give my system a rest and see if my symptoms start to go away again. After being diagnosed with Hashimotos I had my best results when I was doing Piyo and being really strict with my nutrition, making sure to avoid foods that cause inflammation in my body. I know, not very fun right? But that was the only time my symptoms from Hashimotos went fully away for a bit! So I thought I'd follow up with a round or two of Piyo. Not only because they are lower impact but also because we are traveling for nearly two months and Piyo requires ZERO equipment except just your body and a mat! So it's super easy for me to do inside our RV! No excuses, right?!

I also chose Piyo because the last time I was committed to Piyo and had my nutrition dialed in using the Portion Fix system I was losing pounds the easiest I ever have. I think that it's a sweet spot for my body. What I mean is that my body, with it's auto-immune issues, seems to like this balance of low impact but still challenging moves.

You can follow along with my journey with Piyo this time via my social media channels on Instagram and Facebook where I'm posting almost daily about it. And I'll keep you in the loop about my symptoms and how switching back to Piyo affects them, if it does at all!

For any of you that struggle with Hashimotos and are curious, keep checking in. And feel free to ask me anything! I'm not a doctor but I'm happy to share from my own experience in regulating and healing my Hashimotos with just diet and exercise and without pharmaceuticals. Also... if you want to talk more about trying Piyo for yourself and joining in with my private accountability community then shoot me an email! I'd love to help you get plugged in!

PERSONAL | 24 hours in Chattanooga...

Rock City, Ruby Falls, Lookout Mountain, great Mexican Food, firefly sightings, and a sweet treat with friends! Our 24 hours in Chattanooga didn't disappoint!

I'm saving all my Rock City photos for another post because it was so gorgeous there that we took approximately 10,000 photos. Kidding. Not really.

If you want some extra fun while you're driving into Chattanooga, listen to the chapter in American Gods when the gods are converging on Lookout Mountain. It's a little bit surreal to hear the exact area you are driving through so incredibly described by the author!

Ruby Falls with a kid was a lot of fun, and not too dark that is was frightening. Although I will say for a 4 year old the hour long tour was a bit of a stretch and the mile-ish long walk to and from the waterfall through the caves was pretty boring for someone too short to see over most the rocks. Also... muddy. Enough said? HA!

Overall though we loved our quick stop in Chattanooga! The food was incredible! As was our company since we got to catch up with an old friend and our son had a playmate for a bit! Also if you go to Milk and Honey get the sweet cream ice cream and strawberry mixed together. Mercy! Ice cream is my love language.

Nate took this photo of me and it cracks me up because could there ever be a photo of me showing love more than feeding someone a bite of my ice cream? Look at how happy I am! I told you ice cream was my love language!

Spotting fireflies at dusk. He definitely used this as a bedtime stalling strategy and we totally fell for it.
